AI Chip Demand Continues to Surge, HPC Becomes Growth Engine
The report shows that sales of AI-related chips (including GPUs, ASICs, HBM, etc.) grew over 35% year-over-year in Q2, accounting for 22% of total semiconductor sales. As demand for large model training and inference continues to climb, global hyperscale data center capital expenditure exceeded $220 billion in the first half of 2026, with over 60% allocated to AI server and accelerator chip procurement. DRAM contract prices rose 8.5% sequentially in Q2, and NAND Flash wafer prices rose 6.2%, but their trends diverged: strong demand for HBM and DDR5 drove up high-value product prices, while DDR4 and traditional NAND saw narrower gains due to inventory pressure. Wafer Foundry Utilization Rises to 88%, Mature-Node Quotes Stabilize
The wafer foundry industry continued its recovery in Q2. According to TrendForce, the average utilization rate of major global foundries (TSMC, Samsung, UMC, SMIC, etc.) rose from 84% in Q1 to 88%, with advanced nodes (7nm and below) exceeding 95% and mature nodes (28nm and above) recovering to 82%. SIA expects full-year global semiconductor sales to exceed $680 billion, up about 15% year-over-year. The World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) organization forecasts the global semiconductor market will grow 14.8% in 2026 to $685 billion, with AI chips and automotive electronics as the main drivers.
However, the industry is not without concerns. Escalating US chip export controls on China and further tightening of export restrictions on advanced lithography tools and EDA tools by the Netherlands, Japan, and others could disrupt the global semiconductor supply chain. Singapore's Semiconductor Industry: Seizing AI and Automotive Chip Opportunities
As a key node in the global semiconductor supply chain, Singapore performed steadily in Q2. Data from the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) shows Singapore's semiconductor manufacturing output grew 12% year-over-year in H1 2026 to S$28 billion, mainly due to capacity expansion in wafer fabrication and packaging and testing. Fabs operated by GlobalFoundries, STMicroelectronics, and UMC in Singapore are all running at full capacity, especially with strong demand for packaging automotive-grade chips and AI accelerator chips.
